About the practice
We are a 4-partner practice with a part-time salaried GP serving 6,400 patients predominantly social classes 1 – 3. The practice building was originally a church hall built in 1905 and has been extensively modified to provide a welcoming and attractive working environment. We pride ourselves on our friendly atmosphere and good relationships between the clinicians, administrative staff and patients. This is reflected in our very low staff turnover and excellent standards of clinical care, scoring maximum points in the Quality and Outcomes Framework since its inception.
Our clinical team consists of 3 practice nurses and 2 health care assistants. Our practice manager, Margaret Coupes retires shortly and our deputy practice manager Heather Underwood will take over her role. There is a full complement of reception, computer and secretarial staff and we provide a wide range of clinical services.
Dr Rodgers has been a GP trainer since 2004 and two other partners are former trainers. The teaching programme begins with a 4-week induction covering topics such as computer training, prescribing, referrals and basic administrative tasks. An introduction to the primary care team includes attachments to the practice and district nurses, health visitor and pharmacist. Clinical contacts begin with joint surgeries and home visits with the partners. Surgeries, initially with 30 minute appointments, are gradually shortened to 10 minutes over 3-4 months using consultation videos to hone skills. There is a protected teaching session on Thursday afternoons and a well-stocked library. Trainees are encouraged to determine their own learning needs, which are reviewed on a regular basis. The teaching programme and level of challenge are adapted accordingly.
